2025: 1945 and Beyond: The Atomic Bombs and Occupied Japan (Paper Lanterns: Atomic Bomb Survivors, POW Stories & Postwar Japan Context)NEW
New York, NY 10017
This online program begins with a screening of the documentary, Paper Lanterns (2016) [Dir: Max Esposito and Barry Frechette], which introduces an atomic bomb survivor and his lifelong calling to tell the story of 12 American POWs, victims in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, and to reach out to the relatives of these lost airmen. After the film, postwar Japan expert Dr. Fish will introduce the historical context that unfolded in the final stages of World War II, including the events that led to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki followed by the subsequent U.S. Occupation of Japan, a transformative period that reshaped the Japanese Constitution, society, politics and culture.
