Torrance to build monument for Japanese Americans, others interned during WWII.
Torrance could break ground on a memorial dedicated to those who were sent to internment camps during WWII as early as the end of summer. If all goes according to schedule, the monument - which will be at the southeast corner of Columbia Park, near the intersection of 190th Street and Prairie Avenue - will break ground as early as summer's end and be complete by 2026, said Community Services Director John La Rock.

Design Concept
A design concept for the WWII Camp Wall has been completed on a pro bono basis by Gregg Maedo + Associates; Gregg is an extremely competent architect and generous benefactor to the Japanese American Community.

Site Plan
Architect Roger Yanagita was brought on board by Assemblyman Muratsuchi to complete the detailed drawings, plans and cost estimate.

The layout features pathways leading to the memorial walls, located at the southeast corner of Columbia Park, and bordered by Prairie and 190th Streets.

Names to be listed: Word wrapped alphabetically per camp with last name in all caps and first name in upper and lower caps.

We are working in collaboration with Dr. Duncan Williams, who is the director of the Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religion and Culture at the University of Southern California. He is the creator of the Ireizo Virtual names Monument Project that is a web-based memorial honoring the names of over 125,000 persons of Japanese ancestry who experienced incarceration during World War II. Dr. Williams is working to make sure that all names of those that were incarcerated are spelled correctly.

Furthermore, Dr. Russell Endo, retired professor, University of Colorado and a board member of the Tuna Canyon Detention Station Coalition has been working on compiling the names of the 2,000 individuals held at Tuna Canyon Detention Station in Tujunga, California.
