Daylight saving time (DST) ends on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 a.m. local time, when clocks are set back one hour. This shift, often called “falling back,” provides an extra hour of sleep and more daylight in the mornings, although it shortens daylight in the evenings. To prepare, people should set their clocks back one hour before bed on Saturday night.

Introduced in the U.S. during World War I in 1918, DST aimed to conserve energy, although modern studies question its energy-saving effectiveness. While sometimes credited to Benjamin Franklin, the idea of changing clocks seasonally wasn’t initially intended for agriculture; farmers opposed DST due to its impact on their schedules. Although DST is observed consistently now, it wasn’t standardized across the U.S. until much later.
