2026 Celebrate the New Year at Japanese Heritage Shoya House: Traditional 'Shogatsu' (Taiko, Crafts, Mochi-Pounding, Ikebana..) NEW

Celebrate the new year at the Japanese Heritage Shōya House with traditional Shōgatsu (New Year’s) activities-including taiko drumming, botanical craft-making, and ikebana floral arrangements at this event for visitors of all ages.

Taiko Drumming: Experience the powerful and rhythmic sounds of the centuries-old tradition of kumi-daiko drumming with a performance by Makoto Taiko, a group of percussionists from Pasadena. Half-hour performances at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

Botanical Craft: Create your own Shimenawa wreath using rice from our annual harvest and welcome good fortune in the new year.

Ikebana Floral Arrangements: Enjoy the meditative beauty of the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement with The Huntington’s San Marino League Ikenobo School of Ikebana.

About the Ikebana Display
The San Marino League is a nonprofit organization of women committed to philanthropic work in the community as well as furthering their own knowledge of fine arts. In spring 1958, the league’s founding president, Mary B. Hunt, became qualified to teach at the Ikenobo School of Ikebana and began teaching classes to league members. These classes continue today. The league’s dedicated ikebana enthusiasts continue to provide fresh flower arrangements in the original Japanese House every week, year-round.
