Japanese Torii Gate & Cheseborough Memorial Garden, Bath, Maine.
In downtown Bath, a Japanese torii gate and memorial garden honor the people of Tsugaru, who risked their lives to rescue American sailors after the Cheseborough shipwreck in 1889.

The Cheseborough Rescue (History)
Built in Bath in 1882, the Cheseborough ran aground during a typhoon off the coast of Tsugaru while sailing from San Francisco to Yokohama, and local villagers saved four crew members by swimming ropes out through violent waves.

Symbolism of the Torii Gate
A torii gate traditionally marks the entrance to a sacred space in Japan, symbolizing the transition from the everyday world to one of reflection and respect - here, it represents gratitude, friendship, and shared humanity between Bath and Tsugaru.

Importance of the Memorial Garden
The memorial garden offers a quiet place to reflect on courage, compassion, and the lasting bond formed between two distant communities through an extraordinary act of kindness.

Why It’s Worth Stopping By
• A rare Japanese cultural landmark in coastal Maine
• A powerful true story of international compassion
• A peaceful riverside spot with historical meaning

Visitor Tips
• Located along Bath’s downtown Riverwalk - easy to visit on foot
• Take time to read the plaque for full context
• Best enjoyed during a waterfront walk or near sunset
• Ideal for history lovers, cultural explorers, and quiet reflection
