Have you ever wanted to learn the art of Japanese tea ceremony? Register for our Spring Semester and begin the journey! Beginner's lessons start at 9am and occur on Saturdays. For more information, please contact the Chado Association of Philadelphia at [email protected] or Shofuso staff at [email protected].

Tea ceremony - called chanoyu or chado in Japanese - is at once an art form, a spiritual discipline, a way to socialize, and a window on Japanese culture. Practiced for more than 450 years, this unique way of sharing tea has spread around the world. Our teachers are licensed by the Urasenke school of chanoyu, one of the largest in Japan, which is headquartered in Kyoto.

The fee is $100 per month of study, with a one time materials fee of $65 payable to the teacher on the first day of class. Students will renew monthly.

About Shofuso
Shofuso is a 1.2 acre Japanese garden listed as the third best Japanese garden in North America by Sukiya Living, and named the "Best Hidden Tourist Attraction" by Philadelphia Magazine.

Because Shofuso reflects conditions of seventeenth-century Japan, it is not accessible to wheelchairs or scooters. Shofuso is not easily accessible to users of walkers, canes, or prosthetics, and such devices may require a soft protective covering to preserve our historic flooring. We are not handicap accessible.

Shoes are not allowed in the house, but socks or stockings are required. Shoes are required in the garden.

Tours of the house are free but dependent on docent availability. Groups of 10 or more require a reservation. For more information, see our Group & School Tours page.
