Hayao Miyazaki Wins First Golden Globe for ‘The Boy and the Heron’
The legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki has won his second Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film for his latest work, The Boy and the Heron, at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024.

The Boy and the Heron is a fantasy adventure film that follows a young boy who enters a magical world with a talking heron, and explores themes of war, loss, and art. The film is based on an original story by Miyazaki, who also wrote and directed the film. The film features the voices of Soma Santoki, Masaki Suda, Ko Shibasaki, Aimyon, Yoshino Kimura, Takuya Kimura, and others.

The film has received critical acclaim for its stunning animation, emotional storytelling, and poignant message. It is also the most expensive film ever produced in Japan, and one of the longest projects in Miyazaki's career. The film was released in Japan on July 14, 2023, and has grossed over US$148 million worldwide.

Miyazaki, who is 82 years old, accepted the award via video call from his studio in Tokyo. He thanked the Golden Globe voters, his producer Toshio Suzuki, his composer Joe Hisaishi, his cast and crew, and his fans around the world. He also dedicated the award to his late friend and colleague Isao Takahata, who passed away in 2018.

This is Miyazaki's second Golden Globe win, after Spirited Away in 2003. He is also a six-time Academy Award nominee, and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away in 2003. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential animators of all time, and has created many beloved classics such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Wind Rises.

The Boy and the Heron is expected to be released in the US on December 8, 2023, by GKIDS. It is also considered a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards, where it could become the first animated film to win the Best Picture award.

Studio Ghibli, the acclaimed Japanese animation studio behind some of cinema’s most beloved films, has announced plans to release Hayao Miyazaki’s highly anticipated new feature film How Do You Live in summer 2023.

The movie is based on the 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino and follows a 15-year-old boy named Koperu as he embarks on a spiritual journey to find his own path in life. Miyazaki has been working on the project since 2016 and is expected to complete it before its summer 2023 release.

The film marks the first time Miyazaki has returned to directing since 2013’s The Wind Rises, making it even more anticipated by fans of his work. It also looks set to further cement Studio Ghibli's place at the top of animation filmmaking, having already produced some classic films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

Studio Ghibli's announcement comes just weeks after they released their highly successful new feature film, Onward. The film has already grossed over $100 million at the global box office and garnered widespread critical acclaim for its heartwarming story and stunning visuals.

The film is sure to be a visual feast, with Miyazaki's signature animation style having captivated audiences worldwide since his debut feature Castle of Cagliostro in 1979. With How Do You Live, fans can undoubtedly look forward to the same level of stunning visuals, heartfelt storytelling, and imaginative world-building that made Miyazaki's earlier works so iconic.

Miyazaki has stated that he hopes the movie will provide an inspiring message for viewers and give them hope as they tackle life’s challenges. If this proves to be true then it will certainly be an emotional experience for viewers when How Do You Live releases in summer 2023. Until then, Studio Ghibli fans can get excited over the prospect of a new Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece gracing the big screen.
