Berkeley Buddhist Temple Obon is an annual event to commemorate our ancestors. Traditionally, lanterns are hung in front of houses to guide the ancestors' spirits, obon dances (Bon Odori) are performed, and food offerings are made at house altars and temples.

In Berkeley, the Berkeley Buddhist Temple and the Berkeley Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple alternate the Obon Odori. This year's Obon Odori in Berkeley will be held at the Berkeley Buddhist Temple at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, July 12, at 2121 Channing Way.

Bon Odori is a style of dancing performed during Obon. With colorful lanterns lighting the area, we dance to traditional Japanese music to show appreciation for those who have passed before us.

Everyone is welcome. We hope to see you all there!
