Hidden History - Justice Denied
During World War II, the U.S. government imprisoned over 140,000 “enemy aliens” and US citizens in over 60 detention camps and facilities. Crystal City Internment Camp, run by the US Department of Justice, was a family concentration camp for “potentially dangerous” children, women, and men of Japanese, German and Italian descent who were residing in the US or seized from Latin America. Barbed wire and guard towers surrounded all.

At its peak, there were over 2,300 prisoners of Japanese ancestry; almost half were citizens and residents of Peru and other Latin American nations. Many Japanese fathers were taken at gunpoint from Peru at the direction of the U.S. government, declared “illegal aliens”, and imprisoned without due process. Later many were reunited with their families in Crystal City, where they were prepared for hostage exchange for US citizens held by Japan. The camp closed in 1948, long after the end of World War II.

In the many years since, the U.S. government has not fully acknowledged nor been held accountable for the human rights violations of the hostage exchanges nor the WWII Latin American rendition program. Surviving Japanese Latin American internees and their families continue to educate about this “Hidden History--Justice Denied,” demanding full disclosure, proper apology and redress. Survivors and descendants of this internment camp, and their friends and families, will be making a historic Crystal City Pilgrimage October 31-November 3, 2019, to Crystal City, Texas. Please join us!
