Covid Update. Due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County from the Omicron variant, and for the safety of our visitors and staff, we are canceling the onsite activities for the 2022 Oshogatsu Family Festival. Admission to the museum will remain FREE all day on Sunday, January 2, with limited capacity. All scheduled activities are now virtual. Join us on our YouTube channel for a live-streamed demonstration of traditional mochitsuki (Japanese rice pounding ritual) by Kodama Taiko!

Making fresh mochi is a beloved Japanese New Year tradition. Join Kodama Taiko for their unique mochitsuki (rice pounding) demonstration, which incorporates taiko drumming, and enjoy delicious mochi samples while supplies last.

This activity is named in honor of JANM volunteer Ruthie Kitagawa (1937-2020), who led origami activities at the museum for many years.

FUKUBUKURO
Traditionally at New Year’s, stores in Japan clean their inventory of slightly imperfect merchandise and otherwise intact items missing packaging or with dented boxes in fukubukuro, or lucky grab bags. Starting January 2, a limited number of lucky boxes will be available at janmstore.com for only $25.
While supplies last.

All activities will be available January 2, 2022.
