Award-winning Polish cellist Marek Szpakiewicz will perform at the Cello Recital in Memory of 3.11 Earthquake and Tsunami in Tohoku Area of Japan on March 7, 2015 at Azusa Pacific University's Munson Recital Hall.

All donations from this recital will go toward a purchase of a 1/2-sized cello for the Children's Orchestra in Fukushima, organized by El Sistema Japan. This is to help promote younger children to join the cello section of the Orchestra.

Since its inception, Marek has been supporting the Children's Orchestra, and last November, he visited the Orchestra to share his musical guidance and performance.
Marek will also perform his debut recital in Tokyo later this month. His solo performances have already been heard by Japanese people through the film soundtracks of "Hachi," starring Richard Gere, and "Leonie," featuring Emily Mortimer and Shido Nakamura.

At the Tokyo recital, the Tsunami cello will be played. Made from tsunami debris, its sound post was created from a branch of the sole surviving pine tree to stand in one of the devastated areas. The tree has become a symbol of hope and strength for the people of the region. The Tsunami cello was created by renowned violinmaker Muneyuki Nakazawa and was premiered by Yo-Yo Ma.
