Stories from past and present Sawtelle JapanTown people who lived or frequented the West Los Angeles JIS hostel and neighboring boarding houses during the early postWWII resettlement years after concentration camps. At a time when red lined West Los Angeles prohibited home ownership, Nikkei congregated in the Sawtelle boarding houses. What was life like? How did the Nikkei Nisei and Sansei suvive? Besides a few presenters, evidence from previous forums showed many questions and responses from audience participation.

For additional information, please see the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle website, sawtellejis.org, or tosh ishioka ([email protected]) or jack fujimoto ([email protected]).

This forum IV is a forerunner to future forums culminating in the Second Sawtelle Community Reunion scheduled for May 29, 2012.

Future forums are planned for stories of Sawtelle Nikkei talking about their concentration camp experiences, successful Nikkei who spent their youth in sawtelle, sawtelle gakuin graduates, and social organizations in the community.
