About Setsubun
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event that marks the arrival of spring. Celebrated on February 3rd or 4th, Setsubun is a time-honored ritual where people engage in various customs to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune into their homes. One of the central activities involves the throwing of roasted soybeans, known as "mamemaki," to symbolize the casting out of misfortune and welcoming prosperity. Additionally, there is a customary practice called "oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi," which translates to "demons out, good fortune in," where individuals chant and make noise to banish negativity. Families often gather to partake in these rituals, creating a festive atmosphere filled with joy and a sense of unity. Setsubun not only signifies the changing of seasons but also reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Japan, blending superstition, tradition, and communal spirit.
