Have you ever thought about learning a Japanese dance, that is danced all over Japan? A dance that is very easy to learn. A dance that is elegant, graceful and fluid for women in contrast to the wild flamboyant energetic crouching men's style (danced by men and women), each rhythmically pulsating to the beat of the music.

You should consider learning Awa Odori.

Awa odori is more than holding your arms in the air and wiggleling your fingers and and dancing like you're on drugs. It may sometimes seem that way but for the Awa odori enthusiast it is much more.

This coming Sunday, April 10th from 6pm-8pm, a special demonstration/practice session has been arranged at Japanese Village Plaza in Little Tokyo, downtown Los Angeles. For a few hours we go through the "basics," learning and going over the fundamental movements to the dance. Our sensei (teacher) is Machiko Fujii. She is from Tokushima, Japan and has been teaching awa odori since 2005. If you haven't had any instruction on the real awa odori, we strongly recommend coming to our "Basics" class. There is no age limit. Dress in comfortable clothing (T-shirts or sweats are fine) and athletic shoes or jika tabi. Besides learning the dance, it's great exercise. Maybe if you eat before, what better way to burn off those calories? Let's have fun together.
