This authentic Japanese dance festival takes place on Water Street, beside Capital Lake and close to Puget Sound. While the historical and religious origins of the festival are acknowledged, the Olympia Bon Odori is held in the spirit of a secular matsuri or city celebration.
The Olympia-Kato Sister City Association is the sponsor of this event. The association works closely with the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation, which holds a public Lantern Floating for Peace that serenely closes the festival. Volunteer assistance with planning, publicity, site set-up, food preparation, event staffing, and lantern retrieval is always appreciated.
