The Hollywood Japanese Cultural Institute (HJCI), originally founded in 1947 as the Hollywood Japanese Community Center, was created as a cultural home for the Hollywood Gakuen (Japanese language school) and Hollywood Buddhist Church. In 1951, Hollywood Judo Dojo joined the center, later moving into the new multipurpose building completed in 1994, which also expanded facilities with classrooms and community space. Over the decades, HJCI has grown with the support and dedication of Issei and Nisei pioneers, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2017 and 75th in 2022. Today, HJCI remains a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sustained by its members and the community, continuing its mission to preserve and promote Japanese culture in Los Angeles.
