Mukai’s fifth annual Japan Festival is scheduled for September 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It promises to be another fabulous event with taiko drums, mochi pounding, a Children’s Village, arts workshops, and even a kimono workshop. We are particularly thrilled that for our Festival Finale, we will be joined by indie folk sensation Tomo Nakayama who is a singer, songwriter, composer, producer, actor, and curator. His music has been praised by NPR, New York Times, and The Stranger.

Our theme this year is: Okage Sama De!

Roughly translated, the phrase means, “It’s all thanks to you.” The phrase is intended to capture our gratitude to our forebearers and to the larger community for helping make us what we are. This year’s lineup includes taiko drumming, poet Troy Osaki, Bon Odori dancing, a mochi pounding demo, karaoke, and workshops in lino printing, soapstone carving and how to wear kimono. Plus, yummy food!

Each year, the popularity of the Japan Festival has grown, and this year we expect more than 1,000 visitors. That’s where you come in…

Can you please help? We need warm bodies to help with set-up, information booths, welcoming of VIP’s, and more! If you are willing to sign up for a volunteer shift, contact director@mukaifarmandgarden.org
