O-Shogatsu is the traditional Japanese New Year celebration, marking a fresh beginning filled with hope, renewal, and good fortune. At Portland Japanese Garden, guests are invited to welcome 2026, the Year of the Horse (uma), with seasonal decorations, hands-on cultural activities, and festive performances rooted in centuries-old traditions. Kadomatsu arrangements of pine, bamboo, and plum branches will be on display throughout the Garden, symbolizing longevity, resilience, and prosperity.

• Family-friendly Japanese New Year celebration honoring the Year of the Horse
• Sumi-e (Japanese ink-wash painting) activities throughout the day in the Yanai Family Classroom
• Edo Kotobuki Jishi (traditional celebratory lion dance of Tokyo) performed by Portland Shishimai Kai
• Informational talk following the morning lion dance performance
• Traditional shishimai audience interaction offering good luck for the year ahead
• Complimentary coffee by Portland Coffee Roasters and tea by The Jasmine Pearl Tea Company while supplies last
