Japan Festival Boston is an annual, volunteer-driven celebration dedicated to sharing authentic Japanese culture with the Greater Boston community. Established in 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japan's gift of cherry blossom trees to the U.S., the festival has grown into one of the largest cultural events on the East Coast, attracting over 90,000 attendees in recent years. Its mission is to express gratitude to Boston, foster cross-cultural friendships, and pass on Japanese traditions to future generations.

The festival emphasizes sustainability, partnering with organizations like Takeda Pharmaceutical and ChopValue to promote eco-friendly practices, such as recycling and the use of biodegradable materials. Through interactive workshops, cultural performances, and educational initiatives, Japan Festival Boston aims to inspire environmental responsibility while celebrating the richness of Japanese heritage.

What is Japan Festival?
In 2012, the first Japan Festival Boston was hosted, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the gift of cherry blossom trees from Kyoto (the sister city of Boston) to Washington D.C. The Japan Festival Boston gives us a chance to share our culture with the Greater Boston area, and we have been expanding this festival each year (about 70,000 people in the past few years). The festival is completely organized by volunteers (more than 400 volunteers in 2019) and is supported by many sponsors and contributors from the community.
