Kabuki Theatre on Film: "Kumagai's Battle Camp"- 9/22
Interested in Japanese Kabuki theatre? Join us for a special class focusing on a video of the classic Kabuki drama, "Kumagai's Battle Camp." Taking its theme from "Tale of Heike," the play features an all-star cast in one of Kabuki's most famous tragedies.
During the long war between Genji and the Heike Clans, General Kumagai returns to his battle camp. From all accounts, he met the Emperor's son on the field of battle and beheaded him. But perhaps all is not what it seems, especially when it is revealed that he owes the son's family a tremendous debt of gratitude....(Synopsis:http://www.kabuki21.com/kumagai.php)
Only the greatest Kabuki actors are able to portray the grand tragic figure of Kumagai, who is torn amongst loyalty to his lord, a debt of gratitude to his enemy, and devotion to his family.
In Japanese with English translation. Class is free and open to the public. All ages welcome!
