Uehira Baikei is a master calligrapher and teacher as well as founding president of the Seishou Calligraphy Association in Osaka, the city of his birth. Originally pursuing shodo (calligraphy) only for his love of writing, he has gone on to develop new pathways and styles of traditional Japanese calligraphy through collaborations, art shodo, and live performances for more than 30 years. With more than 1200 students under him to date, Mr. Uehira has not only mastered all styles of Japanese writing but is also considered a pioneer of live calligraphy, and continues to create innovative works with hopes of expanding interest in Japanese culture to others around the world.
As part of our new Handcrafted Form exhibition in collaboration with the Craft and Folk Art Museum(CAFAM) and timed in conjunction with their Global Bazaar: Japanese Craft Market event, Mr. Uehira will give a live performance of his big-brush style shodo calligraphic art in Wilshire Courtyard. Just a short walk from the festivities of the Japanese Craft Market at CAFAM, the Courtyard in front of the Japan Foundation becomes the newest stage for this classically-trained master artist and performer, on a rare and brief U.S. tour.
