The local group, Families for Safe Energy (FForSE), will hold a special free event at South Pasadena Library, in the Community Room, on September 13, 2012, to raise funds for children in Fukushima, and to increase awareness of safe energy.

There will be daytime and evening programs. From 3 p.m.5:30 p.m., children can participate in a workshop, where they will learn to decorate Japanese fans. There will be a photo exhibition on Fukushima children, and participants will take home various items from the safe energy campaign, including information on safe energy choices. The children's picture book series, "The Power Families," will be available to read or purchase.

From 7 p.m.8 p.m., up-to-date information on the Fukushima nuclear disaster will be provided by Beverly Findlay-Kaneko, a former faculty member at Yokohama National University, who was in Japan when the disaster happened, and who now lives in Huntington Beach, Calif. She will also discuss Fukushima's implications for California and its precarious coexistence with the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and what it means for the next generations.

Findlay-Kaneko will also share an independent report on Fukushima compiled by her husband, Japanese artist, photographer, and activist Yuji Kaneko, who will be traveling to Fukushima in early September to meet with local activists who are working to improve the situation of people trying to cope with the new reality of living with radiation.

Donations from the free Sept. 13 event will benefit children in Fukushima. For more information, contact 626-344-0179 or [email protected].
