Race Review
Dario Franchitti overtook pole sitter Will Power with an outside move in Turn 1 on Lap 5 and went on to recorded the season-opening victory. Power, who started from the pole and won the 2010 race, finished second. Tony Kanaan held off second-year driver Simona de Silvestro for third, and Takuma Sato finished fifth. It was Franchitti's 27th Indy car victory, tying Johnny Rutherford for 10th on the all-time list. Box score

The winner at St. Petersburg has gone on to win the series championship once in the seven years of the event (Dan Wheldon, 2005).

Fun fact
Young aviator Tony Jannus made history on Jan. 1, 1914, when he flew the world's first scheduled passenger service airline flight from St. Petersburg's downtown yacht basin to Tampa.
