Join us for a Japanese Arts Fusion Event with tanka poetry, butoh dance, live traditional and contemporary jazz music and a Noh theater-inspired art installation.

The program will be arranged by Linda Galloway, PhD. Linda, an internationally established poet, will perform some of her tanka, Japan's most beloved short verse, and play the hamohn, an individually artisan crafted, cast iron percussion instrument. We are happy to have Don McLeod performing butoh, a dance form created out of the existential despair in post-war Japan. Don is an internationally celebrated movement artist, who studied in Japan and under Marcel Marceau in France. For this event, he will perform the world premiere of his newest butoh work.

Karl Young, acclaimed Bay Area musician, will accompany Don and Linda on traditional wooden Japanese flutes. Karl will play a range of music from a Buddhist elegy to jazz improv on these ancient instruments.

The stage will be adorned only with an art installation of a lone Japanese pine, characteristic of the spartan, minimalist nature of the Japanese Noh theatre. The canvas was recently commissioned with a local Los Angeles painter.

Books with tanka poetry by Linda Galloway, a new DVD of Butoh dancer Don McLeod, that includes a PBS interview, and a new CD by Karl Young performing on shakuhachi along with other musicians will be available for purchase and signing. The program starts at 2:00 pm in the upstairs auditorium, followed by a reception.
