USC Doheny Memorial Library
Event Location
Los Angeles, CA 90089
The Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library, commonly called “Doheny Library,” is the main research library at the University of Southern California. Opened in 1932, it was funded by Edward L. Doheny in memory of his son and designed in a Northern Italian Romanesque style, with Ralph Adams Cram as the exterior architect and Samuel Lunden handling much of the interior design.
Architecturally, the building is notable for its grand reading room, ornate detailing, hand-painted ceilings, rich marbles, stained glass, travertine, and decorative ironwork. It has been preserved and retrofitted for seismic safety, while maintaining its historic character.
Functionally, Doheny houses extensive special collections, archives, rare books, and holds a variety of sub-libraries, including collections related to cinematic arts, music, and East Asian studies. It also serves as a venue for cultural events, lectures, exhibits, readings, and general study for USC students, faculty, and researchers.
