The Way of Tea (Experience Harmony, Ritual, and Japanese Culture Up Close)
To celebrate the opening of More Things Japanese, the Heritage Museum of Asian Art invites you to a traditional Japanese tea ceremony led by Urasenke instructor Omar Francis Sensei. This immersive ritual, known as Chanoyu, blends movement, sound, taste, and craft-bringing together ceramics, lacquerware, bamboo, textiles, and the spirit of harmony.

Event Details
Join us for a serene cultural experience honoring centuries-old Japanese aesthetics and philosophy. Chanoyu is far more than preparing tea-it is a sensory journey shaped by mindfulness, grace, and tradition. Two sessions are offered:
• Session 1: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (20 participants)
• Session 2: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm (20 participants)

This program is presented by HMAA and supported by the Japanese Culture Center and Chicago Teahouse.

About the Instructor
Omar Francis Sensei, a 1st-degree instructor (Jyukyōju 準教授) in the Urasenke Tradition of Chanoyu, has dedicated over 30 years to studying and teaching the Way of Tea. His training includes the prestigious Midorikai program in Kyoto, and he has presented tea culture across universities, gardens, cultural centers, and Japan House. Recognized with the Cultural Achievement Award by the Japanese American Society of Chicago, he continues to teach and inspire students through his deep commitment to Japanese aesthetics and philosophy.
