Nikka Yuko is proud to share our annual Golden Maple Reception on October 4, 2023 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the University of Lethbridge in room SA8002.

The Golden Maple is a was to celebrate those of Japanese Ancestry and their contributions to Canada and Southern Alberta. On October 14 listen to former Nikka Yuko board member and current Garden storyteller and volunteer Tad Mitsui as he discusses his life, journeys, hardships, and triumphs. In 2023, Tad recently received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in recognition of significant contributions to the province of Alberta.

The Golden Maple is open to the public and we encourage the public to attend, learn, and celebrate with us.

Dr. Arthur Kazumi Miki, C.M., O.M.
Dr. Art Miki is an active leader in the Japanese Canadian community having served as president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians from 1984-1992. He led the negotiations to achieve a just redress settlement for Japanese Canadians interned during the Second World War. He and his family were forcibly relocated to Manitoba sugar beet farms in 1942.

Art is past-president of the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba and the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba promoting cross-cultural and anti-racism activities. He is an advisor to the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and was on the Community Council for the Landscapes of Injustice Project with the University of Victoria. For his efforts nationally, provincially and locally, he has received this country’s highest recognition, the Order of Canada, the Order of Manitoba and the Order of the Rising Sun from the government of Japan. He received Honourary Doctorate degrees from the University of Winnipeg and St. Johns College, University of Manitoba.

He is the author of a memoir Gaman - Perseverance: Journey of Japanese Canadians’ Journey to Justice (2023), The Japanese Canadian Redress Legacy: A Community Revitalized (2003) and co-author of Shaku of Wondrous Grace: Through the Garden of Yoshimaru Abe (2007).

Art is a former teacher and principal, a Canadian Citizenship Judge and a lecturer at the University of Winnipeg.
