2020 Virtual Tanabata is a Japanese Festival celebrated annually on July 7.
According to legend, the deities Orihime (represented by the star Vega) and Hikoboshi (represented by Altair), fell in love but are kept apart by the Milky Way, only able to meet once a year on Tanabata. To celebrate the occasion, Shofuso is producing lesson plans, crafts, and videos for educators and parents to bring Tanabata home.

This year, Shofuso makes the stories and magic of Tanabata available online for everyone. Download our exclusive Tanabata activities and programming to engage your students, your children, or yourself in Japanese cultures and customs. Activities include three instructional origami videos, a Tanzaku wish paper craft, Kamishibai storytelling, and more. Anyone who loves Japanese culture or Shofuso can download and enjoy celebrating Shofuso's Tanabata at home. Lastly, on July 7th, we'll be hosting a special Facebook Live tour of Shofuso while it is decorated for the event, be sure to tune in!

Pay what you want for this exciting online content to support Shofuso's great programming year-round! Once registered, you will receive an email including the direct link to access the materials on our website.

2019 Previous Year Tanabata Shofuso
Tanabata is a traditional Japanese star festival held in midsummer. Join us to tie wishes (tanzaku) to bamboo stalks around Shofuso, watch our giant star ornaments swish in the breeze, and make paper cranes for good luck. This full weekend of activities includes Japanese storytelling, traditional Japanese music, and drop-in origami and calligraphy workshops!

Our friends from Parks on Tap will be at Shofuso this weekend, with picnic lunches, small bites, and beer on tap, and the garden will be open into the evening.

Admission to the garden is FREE thanks to Parks on Tap. Admission to the house is $5; Shofuso's house will be open to guests until 6 PM.
