LA EigaFest is Los Angeles' premiere Japanese Film Festival. Held at the famous Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA the festival showcases the best of Japanese Cinema. Here are a few highlights -

Unforgiven (US Premiere) + Q&A with director Sang-Il Lee
Decades after the slew of American Westerns based on Japanese predecessors, director Sang-il Lee has turned the tables and reimagined Clint Eastwood's 1992 classic of the same name in this samurai western starring Ken Watanabe. It's the dawn of the Meiji Era in 1880. The Tokugawa Shogunate has just collapsed, and former swordsman for the shogunate Jubei Kamata (Watanabe) has earned a fearsome reputation for slaughtering countless rebels before disappearing into the newly opened land of the Ainu aborigines. After decades of seclusion, and having built a family, Jubei is forced to take up his sword and once again becomes ensnared in a life of violence.

The Wind Rises
Closing out the fest is Hayao Miyazaki's beautiful and poetic last film, based on the manga of the same name. The film centers on Jiro Horikoshi, a man against war who nonetheless follows his passion for designing fighter planes.
