Good theater needs good music. Dating to the early 17th century, nagauta ("long song") is one of the three music types accompanying Japanese kabuki (dance-drama) performances. Now recognized as an independent music genre, it is played with shamisen (stringed instrument) and hayashi (percussion). Shamisen musician Katsushichiro Kineya and group SHAZUMI will perform stirring melodies for your aural enjoyment. Co-presented with Satsuki Kai and Japan Society of Northern California.
