The Paia Rinzai Zen Buddhist Mission holds a unique and significant place in the history of Rinzai Zen practice in the United States. Established in 1932, this temple is situated along the picturesque beach near Paia on the north shore of Maui. The founder, Rev. Nanshin Okamoto, was a Rinzai priest hailing from Okinawa, bringing the rich tradition of Rinzai Zen Buddhism to the shores of Hawaii.

What sets the Paia Rinzai Zen Mission apart is its distinction as the only Rinzai Zen temple from the immigration era in the U.S. This historical context adds layers of cultural and spiritual significance to the mission. Not only does it serve as a center for Rinzai Zen practice, but it also played a crucial role as a temple for the Okinawan community on Maui. In doing so, it became a focal point for both spiritual and communal life, contributing to the cultural tapestry of the local community.

With its serene location by the beach and roots in the immigrant experience, the Paia Rinzai Zen Buddhist Mission stands as a testament to the enduring presence of Rinzai Zen Buddhism in the United States and its ability to adapt and thrive across different cultural landscapes. Visitors to this historic temple not only engage in Zen practice but also connect with a unique chapter in the broader story of Buddhism in America.
