SAMURAI: Armor from the Collection of Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller unveils the culture, lifestyle, and artistry of the samurai warrior in Japanese society. This exhibition spans nearly nine centuries, from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) to the Edo period (1603-1868), showcasing approximately 80 objects, including full suits of armor, helmets, weaponry, and horse armor-used for both combat and ceremonial purposes.

Samurai were part of Japan’s intellectual elite, engaging in artistic pursuits such as calligraphy and poetry, which contrasted with their warrior role. Their armorers were master craftsmen, creating pieces that not only protected in battle but also distinguished the wearer through intricate designs. By tracing the evolution of samurai armor from medieval to early modern Japan, this exhibition highlights the artistic legacy of the samurai and provides a glimpse into over seven hundred years of history.
