Summary
"Lonely Castle in the Mirror" by Mizuki Tsujimura is a YA novel set in modern-day Tokyo. The story revolves around Kokoro Anzai, a 13-year-old girl who refuses to go to school due to a traumatic event. One day, she discovers that her mirror is a portal to a castle. Inside the castle, she meets six other teenagers and the Wolf Queen, who informs them that they have a year to find a key that grants a wish to one of them. However, after the wish is granted, they will forget the castle and each other. As the story progresses, the teenagers bond and learn about each other's struggles. The novel explores themes of friendship, bullying, and social insecurity while incorporating elements of Japanese fairy tales. It combines fantasy elements with real-life problems faced by teenagers, offering a message of finding friendship and connections in unexpected places.

Background
LONELY CASTLE IN THE MIRROR held its International Premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival-marking the first time a Japanese animated feature was selected for the festival - and additionally had its US premiere at the New York International Children’s Film Festival. It was nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, and was a box office hit during its domestic release in Japan in December 2022, grossing over one billion yen (approx. 7.3 million USD).
