1) Manga Workshop: The Basics of Character Creation
4 Wednesdays, June 30 - July 21, 4-5 PM EDT (Online)

Join us for this summer 4 session course in the basics of manga character creation for beginner manga artists. Start a character from scratch and learn the basics of finding ideas, sketching anatomy, detailing expressions, and shading. Whether you are a total beginner looking for a start in the world of manga art, or are looking for a refresher on the foundations of drawing manga characters, this is the course for you!

Tuition
$100/$80 Japan Society Members. Recommended for ages 11-17 year olds. One student per registration. Space is limited to 15 students: advanced registration required.

About Instructor: John Somoza (Drake Tinta) is a local manga artist who has been working in the field since 2012. His major works include an ongoing manga-influenced series titled Ninja Express, which can be read on Comixology.com. Mr. Somoza looks forward to encouraging and teaching the next generation of artists who are looking to enter the field of manga and comics.

2) Manga Workshop: Focusing on Kawaii Style Creations
4 Thursdays, July 8 - 29, 4-5 PM EDT (Online)

This course will explore various “kawaii” or cute style of Japanese manga characters. We will learn to draw Chibi (little) characters, Yuru-chara (Japanese cuddly mascots) and what makes each character unique and popular. Participants will combine it all into your own original character creation. Add an interesting new tool to your artistic toolbox to liven up your artwork with this 4 session course!

About Instructor: Richard Ford III is a professional artist based in NYC. Inspired by Japanese anime, manga, and street art, Richard works with various mediums, from digital illustration to traditional paintings, as well as murals. Richard is excited to share his knowledge and techniques with young artists! Richard received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in illustration from Columbia College Chicago.

3) Intermediate Manga Workshop: Level-Up Your Characters
4 Thursdays, August 5 - 26, 4-5 PM EDT (Online)

Have the basics down but want to take your abilities to the next level? This intermediate course will polish and refine those skills that you already have. We will examine various techniques for facial expressions, gestures, hands, accessories, clothing, and more through step by step instruction and demonstration. Students will gain better artistic understanding of proportion, anatomical structure, movement, and perspective, as well as three dimensional effects on manga characters. Learn to master the “must-have” skills to being a successful artist!
