Join the Okinawa Association of America (OAA) for their annual community celebration on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area (Group Picnic Area, 750 S. Santa Anita Ave., South El Monte, CA 91733). This family-friendly outdoor event is open to all and offers a full day of Okinawan culture, live entertainment, interactive games, and cultural showcases. Highlights include the only Okinawa-style Bon Odori in Southern California, Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko performances, high school scholarship awards, and traditional games like tama-ire (bean bag toss), water balloon toss, and chinahichi (tug-of-war).

Parking is cash only at $7 per car, with a discounted rate of $5 for seniors (65+) and those with a disabled placard. Early arrival is encouraged for the best seating, and carpooling is recommended. Golf cart service is available for members with physical limitations. Food will not be sold on-site, but bentō lunches and raffle tickets are available for pre-order. Attendees can also participate in raffles for prizes such as a Toshiba 43” 4K Smart TV, Dodgers tickets, and more-winners do not need to be present for the main raffle, but must attend to win basket raffle prizes.

Commemorating OAA’s 115th anniversary, the event will feature a special live performance by Takane Kochihira, a renowned Okinawan lyricist and singer-songwriter. The picnic, a tradition dating back to the 1930s, continues to be a joyful multigenerational gathering that strengthens bonds through shared heritage.

Volunteers are needed for July 20 and 21, and donations are welcome to help support the event and OAA’s cultural programs. For more information, to volunteer, donate, or order bentō and raffle tickets.
