Cortez Obon Festival - Honoring Heritage Through Dance and Community
Each summer, the quiet farming town of Cortez in Merced County comes alive as families return to celebrate the annual Obon Festival. Rooted in Buddhist tradition, Obon is a time to honor ancestors and reconnect with the community through music, dance, and culture. In Cortez, the spirit of togetherness is especially strong, with generations gathering to participate in simple, joyful Obon dances, many dressed in yukata and happi coats. The festival is a cherished tradition that emphasizes heritage, remembrance, and celebration.
