Map of Asian Art Museum (Japanese Art) One of the Largest & Comprehensive Museums Dedicated Exclusively to Asian Art in the World , 200 Larkin Street

Spend the afternoon at the Asian Art Museum for a thrilling art performance by GenRyu Arts. Based on the classic tale of The Monkey King, you will be transported on an adventure combining dance, taiko, and jazz fused in spectacular arrangements. These pieces are a celebration of the twenty years that GenRyu Arts has dedicated itself to artful expressions using Japanese cultural forms. The event will showcase JCCCNC's GenRyu Arts school of dance and taiko, GenRyu Arts alumni, Gen Ensemble, master artist Hideko Nakajima, and visiting from Chicago, special guests Tatsu Aoki and Kioto Aoki.

Gen comes from the kanji word meaning "source" or "where the natural spring begins," reflecting the group's roots in Japanese aesthetics and culture and its place in San Francisco's performing arts scene. Founded in San Francisco's Japantown as Gen Taiko in 1995 and incorporated as GenRyu Arts in 2008, the group's mission is to promote, present, and participate in Japanese diaspora culture through taiko, dance, and folk songs along with new music, spoken word, and visual design. These singular expressions honor community heritage and address key issues stemming from the legacy of internment and redevelopment, both of which continue to impact San Francisco's Japanese American community.
