The Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies is a research institution at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C. The center was established in 1984 in honor of Edwin O. Reischauer, a renowned scholar of Japanese history and U.S.-Japan relations, who also served as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 1961 to 1966. The center is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of political, economic, and security issues in East Asia, with a particular emphasis on U.S.-Japan relations.

The Reischauer Center conducts research, organizes academic conferences, and sponsors publications on key issues affecting East Asia. It brings together scholars, policymakers, and students to engage in discussions on U.S. foreign policy, international trade, and regional security. The center also offers fellowships and research opportunities for graduate students, encouraging academic exchange and policy-oriented research.

One of the center’s primary missions is to strengthen academic and policy engagement between the United States and East Asia, particularly focusing on Japan, China, and Korea. It collaborates with leading universities and institutions in Asia to promote dialogue and cooperation. Through its programs, the center contributes to shaping informed U.S. policies toward East Asia and enhancing mutual understanding between these regions.
