The Dohyō at The Fairgrounds is a traditional sumo wrestling ring, meticulously designed to embody the essence of this ancient Japanese sport. Constructed from a mix of clay and sand, the ring stands 18 feet in diameter and is elevated about 2 feet from the ground. The dohyo is carefully maintained, with its surface smoothed and reinforced to ensure both durability and safety for the wrestlers. A series of straw bales, known as tawara, are embedded in the clay around the perimeter, marking the boundaries of the ring. The sacredness of the dohyo is emphasized by the shinto rituals performed before each match, with salt being scattered to purify the space.
