A masterpiece in the Japanese art collection, the DMA’s renowned Dragon King of the Sea is a tour de force of bronze casting and recognized as the most significant Meiji period bronze sculpture in America. For many years, the work was only attributed to the Sanseisha Company, and the attending warrior was identified as Takenouchi no Sukune. Dr. Jacqueline Chao, the DMA's Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Asian Art, will share updated research regarding the many individual artists involved in its creation, and the true identity of the attending warrior and the nature of his meeting with the Dragon King.

A specialist in East Asian and Buddhist art, she is a widely published author and frequent lecturer on Asian art. She holds an MA and PhD in the History and Theory of Art from Arizona State University, and an Honors BA in Art History from the University of Toronto.
