Background West LA
The WLA-Sawtelle area was designated as ‘Sawtelle Japantown’ in 2015. The primary coordinating body for this effort was the Sawtelle Japantown Association (SJA), a grass roots advocacy group created from Dr Jack Fujimoto’s Sawtelle Forums/History Group and led by Randy Sakamoto. SJA has continued to be an active community body providing a monthly or bimonthly forum for sharing of historical data while promoting community discussions on various civic affairs.  The SJA Event Committee was formed in Summer 2019 with co-chairs Naomi Kageyama and Eric Nakamura.  Mark your calendars for Sunday May 3, 2020 for a street celebration of Sawtelle Japantown with local talent, historical tours and general celebration of Sawtelle. Honorary Chair is Dr. Jack Fujimoto.
