It is often said that it rained tea on the day of Buddha's birth. In Japan those who visit a shrine on his birthday take an offering of fresh spring flowers. Hana Matsuri celebrates the fleeting beauty of the delicate cherry blossom and honors the birth of Buddha. The Garden's celebration of this festival will feature an exhibition of flower arrangements by the Saga Goryu School, which is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its North American branch this year. A prayer ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on both days of the festival, and a demonstration of Chado, or The Way of Tea or will occur on both days at noon and 2 pm.
