Founded in 1898, this church is the oldest Jodo Shinshu (Pure Land) Buddhist temple that is affiliated with the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA). Buddhism is founded on the teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha. His teachings originated in India and came to the United States through Asia. The Jodo Shinshu Sect and is one of the major religions of Japan. Our sect's mother temple is the Nishi Hongwanji temple in Kyoto.

Jodo Shinshu Buddhism teaches us to live a life of gratitude,knowing that The Buddha's Boundless Compassion surrounds all living beings.

The church welcomes all visitors and is more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Buddhist Church of San Francisco is a vibrant community of Buddhists from all walks of life. We offer classes, workshops, retreats and special events for both beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Our mission is to promote understanding of Buddhism within the global community and share Buddhist teachings with those seeking spiritual growth.

We offer weekly meditation classes in the SF area where participants can learn the basics of Buddhist meditation as well as how to apply it in their everyday lives. Our retreats provide an opportunity for members to deepen their practice and explore Buddhism at a more profound level.

The SF Buddhist Church values diversity, recognizing the importance of learning from different backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles. We welcome people from all walks of life who are interested in exploring Buddhism and deepening their practice.
