The Plaza was designed by world-famous sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi, a native of Los Angeles. The one-acre open area was added to the overall JACCC design at Noguchi's suggestion and is a valuable open space, hosting such events as the annual Nisei Week Japanese Festival, the Hanamatsuri celebration of Buddha's birth, memorial services for the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a rousing Taiko Festival in 1987 and the open air Kita Takigi (Torchlight) Noh in 1989.
