The Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre is a historical site located in New Denver, British Columbia, dedicated to preserving the memory of Japanese-Canadian internment during World War II. Established in 1994, the centre serves as a poignant reminder of the hardships faced by Japanese Canadians who were forcibly relocated and confined in internment camps following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. This center is one of the few places where original buildings from the internment period have been preserved, allowing visitors to gain an authentic glimpse into the daily lives of the internees.

The centre features a collection of original shacks, artifacts, and interpretive displays that provide insight into the living conditions and experiences of the Japanese-Canadian community during this dark chapter in Canadian history. The buildings, including the internment shacks, communal bathhouse, and gardens, have been carefully maintained to reflect their wartime appearance, creating a powerful and immersive experience for visitors. The exhibits include personal belongings, photographs, and documents that tell the stories of those who lived through the internment.

A visit to the Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre offers an educational and emotional journey, highlighting the resilience and strength of the Japanese-Canadian community. It serves as both a memorial to the injustices suffered and a testament to the enduring spirit of those who endured the internment. By preserving these historical artifacts and stories, the centre plays a crucial role in ensuring that future generations understand and remember the impact of this period on Canadian society.
