Map of Natsunoya Tea House (Est. 1921) Hawaii's Century-Old Japanese Tea House, 1935 Makanani Drive

Natsunoya Tea House, nestled in the picturesque Alewa Heights, holds a special place in the hearts of the Ishimoto family, spanning four generations. Since the 1960s, they've cherished countless milestones within its walls, forming a deep bond with the staff who have become like family. Despite facing challenges from competing restaurants and changing consumer preferences, Natsunoya remains a beacon of tradition and charm in Honolulu's culinary landscape.

Under Lawrence Fujiwara Jr.'s leadership since 1996, Natsunoya has adapted to modern times while preserving its rich heritage. With a view that still captivates visitors and a commitment to Japanese culinary excellence, the tea house continues to draw patrons seeking both atmosphere and tradition. Fujiwara's efforts to refurbish the historic building and explore new marketing avenues demonstrate a dedication to keeping the legacy alive for future generations.

The roots of Natsunoya stretch back to the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake when Lawrence's grandfather, drawn to Hawaii's allure, established the original tea house in 1921. Despite facing challenges such as wartime closures and changing ownership, the tea house endured, becoming a beloved institution in Honolulu. Meanwhile, Nuuanu Onsen Inc., another historic teahouse, struggles to compete, underscoring the unique challenges facing businesses in this niche industry. Yet, Natsunoya's resilience, bolstered by a commitment to quality and community, ensures its continued presence as a cherished cultural landmark in Honolulu.

Feb 25, 2024 Latest News
Unfortunately, the latest news on Natsunoya Tea House isn't positive. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, a fire broke out early on February 24th, 2024, at the site of the teahouse on 1935 Makanani Drive. Although the main structure of the teahouse sustained no major damage, an adjacent home on the property suffered significant damage.
