Come join us on Setsubun where we banish the evil and welcome Spring with good fortune.
This event will take place inside the garden’s gates. We invite guests to make special oni masks, as well as participate in the Mamemaki, or bean tossing event. Special Masu cups filled with Roasted Soybeans for the event will be available for at JFG’s gift shop located inside the Inamori Pavilion.
Guests can also enjoy performances, demonstrations, crafts, and food. Come join us for an exciting event!

About Setsubun
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese festival that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The word "Setsubun" literally means "seasonal division," and it is celebrated on February 3rd or 4th, depending on the lunar calendar.
One of the main customs associated with Setsubun is called "mamemaki," which involves the throwing of roasted soybeans (called "fukumame") either inside or outside the house while chanting "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi!" meaning "Out with the demons, in with good luck!" This ritual is believed to drive away evil spirits and bring in good fortune.
Another common tradition during Setsubun is the eating of a special type of sushi roll called "ehomaki" while facing a specific auspicious direction determined by the Chinese zodiac for that year. People often make a wish as they eat the entire uncut roll in silence.
Setsubun festivities are observed in homes, temples, and shrines across Japan, and it is a time for families to come together to celebrate the changing of seasons and to ensure good luck and prosperity for the upcoming year.
