2025: Annual Sawtelle Japantown Celebration (A Vibrant Celebration Honoring Japanese Culture with Community Events & Festivities) Feb 21-Mar 2, 2025NEW

February 25, 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of  Los Angeles City’s official recognition of Sawtelle Japantown. In 2015, the West Los Angeles community petitioned to rename the area Sawtelle Japantown-to join Little Tokyo, San Francisco and San Jose as one of four remaining Japantowns in the United States. Sawtelle Japantown Celebration (SJC) was established in 2018 to remember and appreciate the history and legacy of a longstanding ethnic minority community.

The annual not-for-profit grassroots Sawtelle Japantown Celebration (SJC) continues to grow and celebrate communities-from Sawtelle, Little Tokyo, Santa Monica, Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Mar Vista, Culver City, Del Rey, Downtown LA, East Los Angeles, San Gabriel, Crenshaw Square, Torrance, Gardena and now Baldwin Hills and Larchmont!

The SJC 2025 banner is on display at Hashimoto Nursery on Sawtelle Blvd. and includes the legacy flower ‘quilt’ contributed in 2023 by students of Nora Sterry Elementary School and LAUSD’s first Japanese Dual Immersion Program in Region West.

This year’s 10-day Celebration begins Friday, February 21 and concludes Sunday, March 2. SJC includes three SPIN Giveaways--the first at Nijiya Market Sawtelle on Saturday, February 22 and the last at Marukai Market WLA on Saturday, March 1. Tuesday, February 25 sees a ‘Special’ 10th Anniversary SPIN Giveaway at Sawtelle’s Only the Lonely and the introduction of the Mini Mochi Churro Giveaway.
