Veterans Day is a day of deep gratitude and reflection across the United States. Observed each year on November 11, it honors all military veterans-men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces-whether in times of war or peace. It is a reminder of the courage, dedication, and sacrifice that protect the freedoms Americans enjoy every day.

Veterans Day originated from Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. In 1954, the name was changed to “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all U.S. wars. It is not a day of mourning but one of appreciation and respect, celebrated with parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

A veteran is anyone who has served honorably in the U.S. military-Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force-whether during conflict or peacetime. They are united by their service and commitment to the country’s values of freedom and democracy.

Holiday Observance
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, meaning that government offices, post offices, and most banks are closed. Many schools and public institutions also close, though some remain open to hold special programs or ceremonies that teach the meaning of service and sacrifice. Most businesses and stores remain open, often offering discounts or special recognition for veterans.

Japanese American Heroes and Legacy
For Japanese Americans, Veterans Day carries a special meaning. During World War II, while many Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated in internment camps, thousands still volunteered to fight for the United States. The legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team, whose motto was “Go For Broke,” became the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in U.S. military history. Their courage and loyalty stood as a powerful statement of American identity and honor-serving a nation that had questioned their belonging.

Veterans Day, therefore, is not only a tribute to those who defended freedom but also a reflection on resilience, equality, and unity across generations of Americans, including those of Japanese descent who fought to prove that freedom belongs to everyone.

Japan and Veterans Day
Japan does not celebrate Veterans Day, as the day is unique to the United States. However, Japan holds its own events to honor peace and remember those lost in war, such as memorials at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and observances marking the end of World War II. These reflect Japan’s postwar commitment to peace.
