The Portland Japanese Garden's Japanese Garden Training Center presents: An afternoon with author and designer Marc P. Keane. "Marc Peter Keane is the undisputed American master of Japanese garden scholars; he is also an educator and garden designer in his own right," Dominique Browning, The New York Times

Landscape architect and author Marc P. Keane is coming to Portland to present a lecture, "Japanese Garden Notes: Seeing Through a Designer's Eye," at the Fields Ballroom of the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Ave, Portland, OR 97205)Saturday, Aug. 26from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Keane is a landscape architect and renowned author of multiple books on Japanese garden design and history, including the newly-publishedJapanese Garden Notes: A Visual Guide to Elements and Design(Stone Bridge Press).

The book has garnered glowing reviews from many, including the Portland Japanese Garden's own Diane Durston and Sadafumi Uchiyama, who jointly wrote that the book "sheds light on the intricate and often overlooked details and important nuances of the Japanese garden with the insight of an experienced designer and practitioner and the eloquence of a scholar, of which Keane is both."

As the first foreigner to obtain a work permit in Japan for landscape architecture, Keane lived and worked in Kyoto, Japan for 18 years, designing gardens for private individuals, companies and temples. His garden design work includes private residences, company grounds, and temple gardens, as well as a park in Tokushima and a historic district in Nagano. He continues his design work now from his studio in Ithaca, New York. His work blends Eastern and Western aesthetics and philosophies. He is also the author of several books on Japanese gardens and some works of literary fiction related to gardens, nature and the human condition. Among his many books areJapanese Garden Design; The Art of Setting Stones: And Other Writings from the Japanese Garden;andThe Japanese Tea Garden.

The event is a co-presentation of the PJG's Japanese Garden Training Center, the Asian Art Council, and the Oregon East Asia Network of the University of Oregon Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. The Japanese Garden Training Center is a new educational initiative of the PJG that seeks to provide a place in North America for learning the skills and techniques for creating and stewarding Japanese gardens while acquainting students with the cultural heart and soul of Japanese garden arts.
